Reliance Manufacturing sold coveralls under its Big Yank name alongside the work shirts that made it famous, and the denim coverall is what most buyers mean by a Big Yank chore coat. The brand's Japanese revival based its 1955 Coverall on a real 1950s Big Yank piece, a boxy work jacket with four front pockets, a flap on one chest pocket and double-needle felled seams. Big Yank also made a 1960s denim jacket in the Levi's Type III style, with an X stitched on each chest pocket and the plain stock buttons store brands used. We found no record of the striped lining sometimes credited to Big Yank coats, so judge one on its tag and construction instead. Look for a coat with its tag still in, and check the pit to pit, since coveralls are cut to go over other layers.

Tag wording
Look for A Reliance Product on the tag. It marks a Big Yank piece from about the 1930s or earlier.
Care label
Check for a printed care label. One means 1971 or later, when permanent care labels became the rule.
Union Made
Union Made on the label or hardware fits mid-century Big Yank work clothes.
Country
Read the country of manufacture. Made in Japan means the modern Big Yank revival.
Reissues and repros
The Japanese Big Yank revival sells a 1955 Coverall in nep denim based on a 1950s Big Yank original, with brass buttons stamped BIG YANK and the Reliance diamond. It's made in Japan, so the tag settles it.
If you’ll wear it
Any sound Big Yank coverall makes a good work or everyday jacket. Fit is what matters, so measure.
If you’ll collect it
Look for an original Big Yank tag, original buttons and a body free of major repairs.
Size it by measurement
Go by pit to pit, back length and sleeve. Coveralls are cut boxy to go over other clothes, so the measurements tell you more than the tag. Ask for pit to pit measured flat with the coat buttoned, then double it.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Look for frayed cuffs and collar points, worn pocket corners and missing or replaced buttons. Replaced buttons are normal on work coats and don't stop it being a good wearer.
01Pit to pit: Ask for the chest measured flat from armpit to armpit with the coat buttoned. Double it and compare with a jacket you own.
02Length: Ask for the back length from the collar seam to the hem. Compare it with a jacket that fits you.
03Sleeve: Ask for the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Check it against your own arm.
04Tag: Zoom in on the tag in the photos. Big Yank should be legible, and Made in Japan means the revival.
05Buttons: Count the buttons in the photos. They should all be there and match.
06Condition: Ask for photos of the cuffs, collar and pocket corners. Fraying is fine, torn seams need a repair.
