Lee · 101-LJ · 1949–present (Storm Rider label from 1953)
Lee's Rider jacket came out in 1948 with a slanted yoke, slanted chest pockets and a zigzag stitch down the front. In 1949 Lee added the 101-LJ, the same jacket with a striped blanket lining and a corduroy collar, and on November 11, 1953 it began using the Storm Rider name and the label with a cowboy riding out a storm. Paul Newman wore one in Hud, and Steve McQueen and Alain Delon wore them too. The lining tells you most of the date. 1950s linings hang loose at the hem, 1960s ones are sewn down, and red stripes mean 1960–65. Vertical-stripe synthetic linings came later, and hand-warmer pockets mean after 1986. Lee did make a lined jacket in the 1930s, but the Storm Rider name came two decades later. For wear, hunt a 1970s or older jacket with a horizontal-stripe wool lining.

Reissues and repros
Lee reissues the Storm Rider under its Lee 101 line, often made in Japan from Japanese selvedge. Japanese brands make close copies too, among them The Real McCoy's Lot 002LJ, Studio D'Artisan's D4187 and The Flat Head. Check the country of manufacture, and pass on a faux-wool lining with nylon-lined sleeves, which Heddels dates to the 1990s and 2000s.
If you’ll wear it
An early-1970s jacket with a horizontal-stripe wool lining is the sensible buy. It's still US-made and wears like the older ones.
If you’ll collect it
Chase the 1950s loose-hem lining or the 1960–65 red-stripe lining, and make sure the lining and collar are original.
Go by pit to pit, body length and sleeve. The Rider jacket is short in the body and fitted, and Denim Archives notes a 101-LJ often feels bigger than its tagged size, with small sizes hard to find. Ask for pit to pit measured flat with the jacket buttoned, then double it for the chest.

Measurements first, then the details
Old wool linings can go stiff and scratchy or pick up moth holes, and the corduroy collar and cuffs wear thin. Small lining holes are fine on a wearer. A replaced lining or collar removes what collectors date it by.
Buying guide
For a Storm Rider to wear, we'd take the USA jacket titled 60s-70s, Union Made and blanket lined at $252 delivered. A Union Made tag points to about 1971 to 1975, and an early-70s jacket with a wool lining is the sensible buy. There are at least 143 for sale and most ask $140–280 delivered. Check the label under the collar (embroidered means 1953 through the 60s, printed means later), horizontal stripes on the lining for wool, and the front for hand-warmer pockets, which mean after 1986. These often feel bigger than the tag, so get pit to pit with the jacket buttoned, then back length and sleeve. eBay's cards don't show seller feedback here, so check it on the item page, and skip the $1,108 Japan listing, which asks over five times the median.
