Levi's replaced the Type I with the 507XX in 1953, and it lasted until the Type III took over in the early 1960s, the shortest run of the three classic jackets. It kept the boxy fit, the front pleats and the riveted cuffs. The big changes were a second chest pocket, flaps on both with bar tacks instead of rivets underneath, and button adjusters at the back waist where the Type I had its cinch. Early jackets carry a leather patch, and Levi's moved to a card patch later in the decade. Heddels lists what an original should show, including a two-sided tab with the ® mark, lemon-yellow thread, selvedge inside the front placket only and one- or two-digit button stamps. Levi's also made a blanket-lined version. Reissues are everywhere, so check the inside first. A leather-patch original is the collector find, and a 1990s Japan-made reissue is the one to wear.

Patch
A leather patch at the back of the waistband means an early Type II. Levi's switched to a card patch partway through the 1950s.
Tab
An original should have LEVI'S in capitals on both sides of the tab, with the ® mark. A small e means a 1971-or-later reissue.
Pockets and back
Two flapped chest pockets with bar tacks under the flaps, rivets only at the cuff vents, and button adjusters at the back waist instead of a cinch.
Selvedge
Selvedge should show inside the front placket and nowhere else.
Button stamps
Originals usually have a one- or two-digit stamp on the button backs. A three-digit stamp such as 555 marks a reissue.
Thread
Heddels lists lemon-yellow as the main thread color on an original Type II.
Reissues and repros
Levi's Vintage Clothing has made a 1953 Type II reissue with a leather patch, and Heddels says a three-digit button stamp like 555 gives it away. Levi's Japan's 1990s 71507XX reissue has a Big E tab and selvedge, with a MADE IN JAPAN tag and button stamps such as J02 or J22. Sugar Cane, Full Count, TCB, Pherrow's, Momotaro, The Flat Head and other Japanese makers copy it closely too.
If you’ll wear it
A 1990s Levi's Japan 71507XX or an LVC 1953 jacket gets you the short, boxy shape without the worry.
If you’ll collect it
A leather-patch original with a two-sided tab and one- or two-digit button stamps is the one to hunt.
Size it by measurement
Type IIs are short and boxy, and they're tagged by chest size, so ask for pit to pit, back length and sleeve length and compare them with a jacket you own. They were cut before Levi's pre-shrunk denim arrived in the 1960s, so an old wash may have taken them below the tag.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Look for frayed cuffs and collar, worn buttonholes and missing or replaced waist-adjuster buttons. Old repairs are expected on a jacket this age, as long as replaced hardware is disclosed.
01Pit to pit: Ask for the chest measured flat from armpit seam to armpit seam. Double it and compare with a jacket that fits you.
02Length: Ask for the back length from the collar seam to the hem. Expect it short, since the Type II is a short, boxy jacket.
03Sleeve: Ask for the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Check the riveted cuff vents in the photos.
04Patch: Ask for a photo of the patch at the back waistband. Leather means an early jacket, card a later one.
05Tab: Zoom in on the tab on the chest pocket. It should read LEVI'S on both sides with the ® mark.
06Button stamps: Ask for the backs of a few buttons. One or two digits suit an original, while 555 or a J stamp means a reissue.
07Inside: Look for selvedge inside the front placket and no care label. A care label or MADE IN JAPAN tag means a reissue.
08Condition: Ask for close photos of the collar, cuffs, buttonholes and waist adjusters. Both adjuster buttons should be there.

Which one to buy

For a Type II we'd take the 1950s jacket a Japanese dealer titles no repair with a double-sided tab, at $4,500 with free shipping, under the $5,354 median. We found nine for sale (the estimate is at least 15), most asking $3,150–7,500 delivered, and seven of the nine ship from Japan, where shipping alone can add $600–1,375. Every cheaper 507 we found was a 1990s reissue, a 70507 or a modern 2nd, so check the inside of any jacket first. An original has LEVI'S on both sides of the tab with the ® mark, one- or two-digit button stamps and no care label, and a leather patch at the back waistband means an early one. They're short, boxy and tagged by chest size, so ask for pit to pit, back length and sleeve and compare them with a jacket you own.

Levi's 50s Vintage Jean Jacket 507XX No Repair Double Side Tab Men's Outerwear
A US seller's Type II titled dark wash with two flap pockets, tagged 38, at $5,208 delivered. The 38 is the chest tag, so ask for pit to pit and back length before you offer.
