Wrangler 936DEN Cowboy Cut Slim Fit
Wrangler's Cowboy Cut barely changed for decades, but by the late 1980s it had a slim sibling. A 1994 Cowboys & Indians history says the 936DEN was developed about six years earlier as a slimmer cut of the Western jean, alongside a 946DEN regular fit. It keeps everything that makes a Cowboy Cut, the W stitching, the patch, the zip fly and a leg that fits over boots, with a closer fit that western stores pitch as working under chaps. By 1995 dealer ads were listing it right under the 13MWZ, and it's still sold in rigid and prewashed (936PWD) versions. Most listings are recent imported pairs. If you want an older one, look for Made in USA on the tag, since Wrangler closed its last American sewing plant in 2005.

- Back pockets
- Look for the W stitch on the back pockets. The 936DEN keeps all the Cowboy Cut styling, so plain pockets mean a different jean.
- Style number
- Check the tags for the style number. 936DEN is the rigid denim version and 936PWD the prewashed one.
- Made in
- Read the country on the tags. Wrangler's last American sewing plant closed in 2005, so Made in USA means an early-2000s pair or older.

The 936DEN is still made, so most listings are recent imports. Made in USA on the tag is the quickest way to find a 1990s pair.

Size it by measurement
The 936DEN is the 13MWZ cut slimmer and closer, still high enough at the waist and open enough at the hem to go over boots. Retailers list today's pair at about an 11-inch front rise and a 16½-inch leg opening around, against roughly 11⅞ inches of front rise on a 13MWZ. Rigid pairs can shrink up to about an inch in the waist over the first washes. On an older pair, ask for the waist flat and doubled, the front rise and the thigh, and compare the thigh with jeans you own.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Slim fits take strain at the thighs and crotch, so look there for thinning and blowouts, along with hems frayed by boot heels. Crotch darning is a fine repair on a pair you'll wear.
- 01Waist: Ask for the waist measured flat across the top of the waistband, then double it. Rigid pairs can lose about an inch after washing.
- 02Inseam: Ask for the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem. Long inseams are normal on a jean made to stack over boots.
- 03Rise: Ask for the front rise from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Today's pair is listed at about 11 inches.
- 04Thigh: Ask for the thigh measured flat just below the crotch. Compare it with a pair that fits you, since the slim cut is tightest here.
- 05Leg opening: Ask for the leg opening measured flat at the hem, then double it. Expect about 16½ inches around.
- 06Back pockets: Check the back pockets in the photos. The W stitch should be there.
- 07Tags: Ask for photos of the inside tags. 936DEN with Made in USA marks an older pair.
