Wrangler 13MWZ Cowboy Cut
The 13MWZ is the 11MWZ under a new number. Around 1952 Blue Bell renamed it for the 13-ounce denim it now used, though a Wrangler story says the 13 counts Rodeo Ben's tries at the pattern. In 1964 Wrangler brought in broken twill, a zigzag weave that stops the legs twisting, and in 1974 the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association made Wrangler its official jean. The details Rodeo Ben drew in 1947 are all still there, from the seven belt loops and flat rivets to the watch pocket at the waistband and the W and patch on the back pockets. Blue Bell merged into VF in 1986, and the last American sewing plant shut in 2005. For a vintage pair, look for Made in USA on the tag and the Blue Bell logo on older labels. Pre-1964 pairs in left-hand twill are the collector's version.

Reading a 13MWZ listing
- Weave
- Ask for a close-up of the denim. Wrangler's broken twill, a zigzag weave made to stop the legs twisting, came in 1964, and earlier pairs are left-hand twill.
- Label
- Look for the Blue Bell logo above the Wrangler name on the label inside. 1960s labels carry it with Sanforized and Made in U.S.A., and later Wranglers dropped it.
- Patch
- Check the right back pocket for the Wrangler patch. 1960s patches were plastic and often came off, so a darker rectangle where one used to be is common on old pairs.
- Top button
- Look at the top button. A red rope logo on a silver button is the 1960s style.
- Made in
- Read the country on the tags. Wrangler's last American sewing plant closed in 2005, so Made in USA means an early-2000s pair or older.
- Care tag
- A sewn-in care tag points to 1971 or later, when care labels became mandatory. No care tag at all fits a 1960s pair.
Reissues and repros
The 13MWZ never left production, so most listings are recent imports. Wrangler made a Special Collectors Edition for the 50th anniversary in 1997 and sells a 13MWZ Selvedge today. Vintage Wranglers have felled outseams, so a selvedge edge or an imported care tag means a newer pair.

Collectors want 1960s pairs with the Blue Bell label, pre-1964 left-hand twill and the patch still on.
Size it by measurement
Go by measurements. The Cowboy Cut sits high at the waist and runs straight through the leg to fit over boots, and the back rise is higher than the front so it stays put in the saddle. Rigid pairs can still shrink up to about an inch in the waist over the first washes, and cowboys bought them long to stack on the boot, so check the inseam. Today's 13MWZ is listed with a leg opening of about 16½ to 16¾ inches around. On an older pair, ask for the waist flat and doubled, the front rise, the thigh and the leg opening.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Expect frayed hem backs from boot heels, worn knees, crotch blowouts on ridden pairs and patches that have fallen off. Crotch darning and a re-hem are fine on a pair you'll wear.
- 01Waist: Ask for the waist measured flat across the top of the waistband, then double it. Expect an inch or two under the tag on a washed pair.
- 02Inseam: Ask for the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem. Cowboy Cuts were bought long to stack over boots, so a long inseam is normal.
- 03Rise: Ask for the front and back rise. Expect a high rise with the back cut taller than the front.
- 04Leg opening: Ask for the leg opening measured flat at the hem, then double it. Today's 13MWZ is listed at about 16½ to 16¾ inches around.
- 05Weave: Ask for a close-up of the denim. A zigzag broken twill means 1964 or later, a plain diagonal twill an earlier pair.
- 06Tags: Ask for photos of every tag inside. Made in USA and the Blue Bell logo point to older pairs, an imported care tag to the 2000s or later.
- 07Condition: Ask for photos of the crotch, knees and hem backs. Small darns are fine, but an open blowout needs a repair.
