Wrangler 13MWZPW Prewashed Cowboy Cut
PW on a Wrangler style number means prewashed, though sellers often read it as Pro Rodeo. The 13MWZPW is the standard 13MWZ Cowboy Cut, washed at the factory so it arrives softer and a shade lighter than the rigid version that buyers break in themselves. The mix-up is easy to see, since western stores still sell it as the official ProRodeo competition jean, and Wrangler has been the PRCA's official jean since 1974. The suffix was in use by the late 1970s or early 80s, when Wrangler made a prewashed 31MWZPW in the USA that Long John later showed worn to a ranch hand's shape. Older pairs are the ones to hunt. Look for Made in USA on the tag, since Wrangler's last American sewing plant closed in 2005, and expect anything newer to be imported.

Style number
Look for PW after 13MWZ on the tags or in the listing. It stands for prewashed, a standard 13MWZ washed at the factory.
Wash
Check the color in the photos. A prewashed pair starts out lighter and softer than a rigid 13MWZ, so even, mid-blue denim with little wear can still be a newish pair.
Made in
Read the country on the tags. Wrangler closed its last American sewing plant in 2005, so Made in USA means an early-2000s pair or older.
Weave
Ask for a close-up of the denim. Every PW pair should show Wrangler's zigzag broken twill, used since 1964.
Reissues and repros
The 13MWZPW is still in production, so most listings are recent imports. Made in USA on the tag is the quickest way to find an older pair.
If you’ll wear it
This is the Wrangler to buy if you want the Cowboy Cut without breaking in stiff rigid denim.
If you’ll collect it
Few collect these, but a USA-made pair from the 1980s or 90s with real wear has the fades people want.
Size it by measurement
It's the same Original Fit as the 13MWZ, high at the waist and straight through the leg over boots. A prewashed pair should stay closer to its tag than a rigid 13MWZ, which can lose up to about an inch in the waist over the first washes. Retailers list today's 13MWZPW at about an 11⅞-inch front rise and a 16¾-inch leg opening around. On an older pair, still ask for the waist flat and doubled, the inseam and the rise, because years of washing change any pair.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Prewashing takes some life out of the denim, so knees and the seat wear through sooner on a hard-worn pair. Look for frayed hem backs from boot heels and crotch wear. A darn or patch is fine.
01Waist: Ask for the waist measured flat across the top of the waistband, then double it. A prewashed pair should sit close to its tag.
02Inseam: Ask for the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem. Long inseams are normal on a jean made to stack over boots.
03Rise: Ask for the front rise from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Today's pair is listed at about 11⅞ inches.
04Leg opening: Ask for the leg opening measured flat at the hem, then double it. Expect about 16¾ inches on a current pair.
05Style number: Ask for a photo of the inside tags. 13MWZPW or a prewashed note confirms the version.
06Made in: Read the country on the tag in the photos. Made in USA means an early-2000s pair or older.
07Condition: Ask for photos of the knees, seat and hem backs. Thin spots are common, but holes need a repair.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
For a prewashed Cowboy Cut, we'd take the Made in USA pair tagged 31x30 that the seller measured at 30x28, at $32 delivered. There are at least 215 for sale, all from US sellers here, and most ask $25–40 delivered. PW stands for prewashed, though sellers often read it as Pro Rodeo, and it's the standard 13MWZ washed at the factory, so it stays closer to its tag than a rigid pair. Look for Made in USA on the tags, since Wrangler's last American sewing plant closed in 2005, and pass on a Made in Mexico pair like the 2007 one here if you want an older one. Get the waist flat and doubled, the inseam and the rise from the photos or the seller.
