Levi's · 501 · Late 1980s to 2003
Plenty of buyers just want a 501 made in America, and the 1990s pairs are the easiest way in. The selvedge had gone by then, so the outseam is overlocked, but the jeans were still sewn in US plants, and Permanent Style rates the denim above today's 501. It didn't last. Levi's started closing American plants in late 1997, announced 11 more closures in 1999, shut the Valencia Street factory in San Francisco in 2002 and closed its last US plant, in San Antonio, at the end of 2003. So a Made in USA care label puts a pair before 2004. The label also carries a month and year date code, and the number on the back of the top button names the factory, with 555 for Valencia Street. Patches from the early 90s print 501xx in black. Sizes are all over the place in this era, so buy on measurements and pick the fade you like.
Date it from the photos
Reissues and repros
Early Levi's Vintage Clothing pairs were also made in the USA with three-digit buttons like 555 and 554, but they're period reissues with their own LVC labels and Big E or older-style details. A plain 501 with a 90s care label isn't one of them.
If you’ll wear it
This is the easy way into a USA-made 501. Buy for the measurements and the fade you like.
Many 90s 501s were sold shrink-to-fit, so the tag and the real size differ, and not by the same amount from pair to pair. Sellers may list either one. Permanent Style also found the rise varies in this period even though the cut stays close in the hips and straight in the leg, so get the waist measured flat and doubled, the front rise and the inseam before you buy.

Measurements first, then the details
Look for crotch blowouts, knee holes, frayed hems and broken belt loops. Darns and a re-hem are fine for a pair you'll wear, but ask about holes the photos don't show.
Buying guide
For a USA-made 501 to wear, we'd take the dark 90s 501XX measured at 30x32 (tagged 33x36), at $91 delivered. There are at least 183 for sale, nearly all from US sellers, and most ask $70–130 delivered, so you can wait for your size. Many were sold shrink-to-fit and sellers list either the tag or the real size, so favor titles that give both and check the waist measured flat and doubled, the rise and the inseam. Ask for both sides of the care label to see Made in USA and the date code, since every US plant had closed by the end of 2003. Skip the $100 listing with no size from a zero-feedback seller, and the $207 black boot cut, more than twice the band median.
$43.99est. delivered
The lowest price here, a no-bid auction for a 30x30 the title calls actual size, from a US seller. We'd stop near $70 delivered, the bottom of the band, where fixed-price measured pairs start.
