Sears put Alvah Roebuck's name on a jean in 1949 as its answer to the private-label Western jeans it didn't stock. Roebucks were sold as rider jeans born and bred in Texas, and the early ones were serious Western wear, with Sanforized 11-ounce denim, a zip fly, a U-shaped crotch with curved seams that wouldn't chafe, a triple-ply waistband, bar-tacked hip pockets and a brass snap where most jeans had a button. Sears sold them to men, youths and boys and told buyers to measure low on the hips, Western style. The name carried on through flared all-cotton pairs in the 1970s and 14-ounce denim in 1981, and Sears was still selling Roebucks jeans in 1995. Later the Roebucks name went onto Sears work clothes. Hunt an early-1950s pair if you collect, or a 70s or 80s pair to wear.

A 1970s or 80s pair in all-cotton denim is a cheap, solid Western jean. Buy it on measurements.
If you’ll collect it
Early-1950s pairs with the brass snap top and Keystone back loop are the scarce ones.
Roebucks were Western jeans made to sit low on the hips, and Sears told buyers to measure their waist about 1½ inches below the regular belt line, so compare the measured waist with where you'll wear it. Early pairs were Sanforized to shrink no more than 1%, but decades of washing still change things. Ask for the waist flat and doubled, the front rise, the inseam and the leg opening. Men's waists ran 30 to 44 in the early 1950s, with young men's, youths' and boys' sizes below that.

Measurements first, then the details
Expect worn knees, frayed hems and crotch wear, and check that a 1950s brass snap still closes. Darns and patches are fine on a pair you'll wear.
Buying guide
For a pair of Roebucks to wear, we'd take the 80s Genuine Roebucks made in USA that the seller says measures 39x29 (tagged 40x30), at $21 delivered. There are at least 117 for sale, all from US sellers in our sample, and most ask $20–45 delivered, mostly 1970s to 90s USA-made pairs with a few flares, boot cuts and carpenter jeans. Roebucks were cut to sit low on the hips, so compare the measured waist, doubled, with where you'll wear it, and get the rise, inseam and leg opening, where a wide opening means a 70s flare. To date one, look for a care tag, which became mandatory in 1971, and read the label, since Sears, Roebuck and Co. fits before the early 1970s. eBay's search cards don't show seller feedback for these, so check it on the item page, and skip the $124 pair titled 1960s with no tags, over three times the band median.
