Levi's 559 Relaxed Straight
The 559 is Levi's relaxed straight. It has the extra room through the seat and thigh of a 550 but runs straight down the leg instead of tapering. We couldn't find a launch year from Levi's itself. US-made 559s from the 1990s turn up regularly, so it was in the line before Levi's closed its last American plant in 2003. Today it's sold as an everyday jean, often in stretch denim, and the vintage interest sits with the all-cotton US-made pairs from the 1990s and early 2000s. These aren't collector pieces, which keeps them easy to find. Look for MADE IN USA and 100% cotton on the tags, and buy by the thigh and leg opening measurements.

Reading a 559 listing
- Made in
- MADE IN USA on the tags means a pair made before Levi's closed its last American plant in 2003. Most 559s for sale were made elsewhere.
- Fabric tag
- Older pairs are 100% cotton. Elastane on the fabric tag means a newer stretch 559.
- Top button
- The three-digit number on the back of the top button is a factory code. 555 is the Valencia Street plant in San Francisco.
- Inside tag
- The inside tag carries a date code next to the factory number. Collectors read the month and year from it.

An all-cotton US-made 1990s pair is the one to buy if you want the relaxed straight look with some age on it.
Size it by measurement
The 559 has extra room in the seat and thigh and a straight leg, so the leg opening stays wide. Ask for the waist flat and doubled, inseam, front rise, thigh and leg opening, and check the fabric tag, because a stretch pair fits smaller than its measurements suggest.

What to check
Measurements first, then the details
Expect worn crotches, frayed back hems and some knee wear. A reinforced crotch or a small patch is fine on a pair you'll wear.
- 01Waist: Ask for the waist measured flat across the top of the band, then double it. Expect it to differ from the tag on a washed pair.
- 02Inseam: Ask for the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem. Check whether the hem has been shortened.
- 03Thigh: Ask for the thigh measured flat just below the crotch. Compare it with a pair you own.
- 04Leg opening: Ask for the hem measured flat across. A straight 559 opening stays close to the knee width.
- 05Fabric: Ask for a photo of the fabric content tag. 100% cotton suits an older pair.
- 06Made in: Check the inside tags for MADE IN USA. Most 559s for sale weren't made in the US.
- 07Condition: Ask for close photos of the crotch, knees and back hems. Small repairs are fine for wearing.

Elastane on the fabric tag means a newer stretch 559, which fits smaller than its measurements suggest. Ask for the thigh and leg opening along with the waist measured flat and doubled and the inseam, since the straight leg is what sets it apart from a 550. eBay's search cards don't show seller feedback for these, so check it on the item page.
