Levi's 70505 Trucker Jacket Small e
This page covers the Type III after the tab switched to a small e in 1971, the jacket Levi's still sells as the Trucker. Levi's historian says the Trucker name came from collectors in the Japanese vintage market in the 1980s, the same decade Levi's added side hand pockets. Heddels dates those pockets to about 1984, the year Levi's outfitted the US Olympic team. So a small e jacket with only chest pockets is a 1970s or early 80s one, and four pockets means mid-80s or later. The lot number changed as fits and lengths came and went, from 70505 to numbers like 71205 and 70518, and 1980s US jackets often read 70506 or 71506. Levi's also sold blanket-lined and sherpa-lined versions. US production ended in 2003. Pick a US-made two-pocket jacket for the 70s look, or a four-pocket 80s one to wear hard.

Reading a 70505 listing
- Tab
- A small e (Levi's) on the chest-pocket tab means 1971 or later. A capital E belongs to the earlier Type III or to a reissue.
- Hand pockets
- Only two chest pockets suggests the 1970s to mid-1980s. Side hand pockets mean about 1984 or later.
- Lot number
- Read the lot number on the neck label or inside tag. 70505 is the classic, and 1980s and 90s US jackets often read 70506 or 71506.
- Made in
- MADE IN USA on the tags means it was made before Levi's closed its last American plant in 2003. Canada-made jackets turn up too.
- Button stamps
- The three-digit number on the button backs is a factory code. 555 is San Francisco's Valencia Street plant, which also made reissues.
Reissues and repros
Levi's still makes the Trucker, so check for a modern care label and country of origin if you want a vintage one. Levi's Japan's 1990s 71506XX is a Big E Type I reissue, not this jacket, even though US truckers also used 71506 lot numbers, so read the whole label.

Measurements first, then the details
Expect frayed collars and cuffs, stretched buttonholes and wear along the seams. On lined jackets, ask about the lining too, since blanket and sherpa linings stain and tear.
- 01Pit to pit: Ask for the chest measured flat from armpit seam to armpit seam. Double it and compare with a jacket that fits you.
- 02Length: Ask for the back length from the collar seam to the hem. Compare it with a jacket you own.
- 03Sleeve: Ask for the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Check the cuffs in the photos for fraying.
- 04Tab: Zoom in on the chest-pocket tab. A small e means 1971 or later.
- 05Pockets: Check the front in the photos. Two pockets suggests pre-1984, four pockets 1984 on.
